After the Bulgarian church was separated from the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, the Bulgarians decided to build a church in Fener, some 150 meters north of the Patriarchate, in proportion to the Greek Cypriots. A project competition opened in 1890. Because of the rottenness of the ground, iron skeleton method was chosen to be lighter and durable by considering the bases of the piled pile structure. The Armenian architect Hovsep Aznavur from Istanbul won the project competition. The international competition held in 1892 for the implementation of the church project and the production of structural components was carried out by the Austrian company R. Ph. Waagner won. When the pieces were completed, the church was set up in the garden of the factory in Vienna before the company. Then the removed building elements moved to Istanbul with a boat over the Danube River and the Black Sea. It was rebuilt at the present place with a work of one and a half years, and worship was opened in 1898.
